Thank you to everyone who has emailed or spoken to me about their plans to introduce digital technology to support learning. I’m really excited to hear your ideas and will be sharing them here on the blog. Following the Staff Development event, I know a lot of you have been putting some thought into how you can make your lessons more interesting for you to teach and for your students to learn.

Making use of the whiteboard, collaborative group work to produce powerpoint slides, making animation videos, using QR codes, using interactive resources from Triptico, using padlet and online quizzes like Socrative are just some of the ideas you’ve been sharing.

We’re entering the age of teaching Generation Z – those born since just before the start of the Millennium and those “connected” since birth.

Generation Z have grown up in a world of technology and they are rarely seen without an electronic device in their hands.

Why? Humans whatever age learn best through multiple channels. It makes it more interesting to learn and more interesting for you to teach. Encouraging students to do some independent learning and research either inside or outside the classroom will make them higher achievers.

Three ways to engage Generation Z Students:

Interact and Engage

The young people of Generation Z love to interact, engage and be actively involved. Think about introducing interactive games, quizzes and puzzles into your lesson plans. Make use of a wide variety of resources such as websites, videos and search engines like Google for researching topics.


Make use of Generation Z’s love for technology and love for their favourite objects, often the mobile phone. Introduce elements of flipped learning into your lesson plans, by switching students to learn elements online where they can study at their own pace: pausing, rewinding and fast forwarding as they wish. Use Access Tube to watch videos. Ask them to look up and watch a video clip on the subject. Students can replay, pause, get tested, get feedback, create their own video, create a mindmap, create a quiz, create a mindmap, create a podcast, contribute to a new learning resource etc. Make resources colourful and interesting, by using images and diagrams.

Collaborate and Create

Generation Z’ers love to collaborate and create. Task them with creating their own learning resources and doing their own research on a subject. Set them off with a framework and let them do the rest. Make use of blogs and wikis for your students to create and edit resources and share resources.
